An American Take on African Movies

With several thousands of African and Nollywood movies made in a year, you wonder who is most commanding of these movies? Where are the Nollywood movie consumers? You might be surprised that Nollywood has a worldwide following, not only from its own people, but from all spectrums of civilization. So much so that some movie theaters in Nigeria show Hollywood along side Nollywood movies everyday. There are also theaters right here in the Unites States that do the same.
Nollywood cinema comes second only to Bollywood and generates well over $500 million dollars every year in revenue worldwide. These statistics were based solely on wholesaling and DVD distribution. But now with most industries shifting gears to catch the online movie action, websites like Boycee OnDemand have popped up and are taking the industry by storm. I wouldn't be surprised if Nollywood DVD's become obsolete is a few years.....just like the record player and hammer pants!
The other reason for that is ....yup you guessed it....PIRACY! As soon as a DVD is released by its producer (who by the way spends thousands to make), they almost instantly fall victim to the greedy piraters who mass produce their hard work and rob them of their due profits. This has also affected online sites. People have become frustrated and are learning how to protect themselves against this. The best way to tell an online movie has been stolen...the quality. Some sites have such bad quality that the actors faces are too pixelated to even decipher . Those I dont give the time of day.
I saw boycee ondemand when they first launched and they were just offering free content to get users there. I thought they were just another one of those sites who steal movies and slap them online but I have close friends who produced movies and put them on boycee ondemand and he told me that they fight against piracy and will not feature content that is stolen. I said "Na LIe!" I was sold when I watched a movie on my TV on my roku box. But hey, I'm lazy so I enjoy not going to the store to buy my fav nollywood movies.
My final question: So who is getting the biggest piece of that $500 million pie? The piraters of course. They wholesale to stores and sites while the poor producers who actually invested his blood, sweat, and tears (okay, maybe just their sweat...but still) into his project and never breaks even.
Why do I care? (ok I lied...this is my final question): Like I said, I have worked on some of these film behind the scenes and I see what it takes from start to finish. So for someone to make more money than the producer is an outrage!
Anyhoo, this is just me rambling but its only the beginning.Cant wait to critique all the new movies. Until next time my pretties!
New Nollywood Movie: I Surrender All
Now I haven't seen this one but from the looks of it, it seems very promising. The production is legit and the camera movers are killer! I have searched for the DVD (I know I can be old school sometimes) but low-and-behold it's only available on one website. Trust me, I've. Checked everywhere.
It's about a wealthy man who is fighting to keep his wife. But her plate isnt totally clean either. She has given her life to God and tries to urge her husband to do the same. Well, some people get killed...etc..
Stumbled on and found something I wasn't quite used to seeing but it made me so excited.....Nollywood online where I could see the ENTIRE movie without it freezing. It was crazy! It was like watching TV.
