Timeless Movies

Sometimes movies can be a mirror into the past, allowing us to see how folks used to talk and behave back then. Although technology has radically changed the film industry, the first decades of the cinema had many gems. Many of them will not appeal to a young generation, but here is a list of films that are, in my opinion, timeless. These movies can be enjoyed by the whole family, no matter of what generation they are.
All About Eve. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, “All About Eve” follows the story of a young aspiring actresses who manages to enter the company of a famous but aging theatre actress, by the name of Margo (Bette Davis). This is a film about the decline of a Diva and the rise of a new star. However the film itself is a metaphor for the decline of the theatre’s popularity and the rise of cinematography.
Modern Times. If we are talking about old movie masterpieces we can’t leave out a Charlie Chaplin film. Directed and starting one of the most beloved comedy actors, Modern Times is a story about love with plenty of social commentary and humor. Although it may seem like a comedy, the movie has a more profound aspect as many scenes focus on the life and conditions of the American working man. One of the last victories of the silent movie age, Modern Times is a silent movie that will make you laugh out loud!
Citizen Kane. Citizen Kane is a film that should be seen by all. It is one of those movies that justify the art status of cinematography. Directed and starting Orson Welles, Citizen Kane unravels all its greatest as a story of success and failure, love and hate, shadow and light. While watching this movie, pay attention to the innovative filming techniques: how the director makes use of shadows to reveal the emotional state of the character, the filming angel etc.
Double indemnity. Lastly but not least, I recommend Double Indemnity, the Godfather of detective movies. The story is about an insurance agent who falls in love with the wife of a rich man, named Phyllis. The insurance agent is convinced to scam the insurance company, by killing the husband and sharing the life insurance policies death benefit with the wife. Fast paced and with plenty of twists, Double Indemnity, makes for a great Friday evening movie.
